The struggles faced there, though more tangible and threatening than anything here, are something he’d much rather come up against than this.  “Jet?” A voice from below. Of course. Fic idea - Dai Li's brainwashing doesn't work on Zuko (Jetko)

Both Jet and Zuko get arrested by the Dai Li. Iroh doesn't see it in time to interfere.

They get stuck in cells next to each other and every day both Jet and Zuko are taken to the room with the spinning light.

But watching the fire turning doesn't have the same effect on Zuko, he can feel the spinning fire with his bending and is more aware of it through that than through seeing it. The first day he doesn't even understand what they are trying to do to him.

Then he comes back to his cell and Jet is acting weird. Asking questions he should know the answer to, and this is where Zuko starts getting worried.

He learns to play along and pretend, say what they want to hear. He's had years of practice doing this at home after all, he can tell when someone want him to say something specific.

Every night he comes back to the cell and talks to Jet who gets more lost and confused as the days pass by. Zuko doesn't know what to do, and just keeps talking trying to keep Jet sane.

One night Jet comes back and doesn't remember him. He asks if they're friends.

Zuko says yes even though he knows it's a lie.

Jet hates his face. He can't stand to look at it. He always looks away from mirrors when he's in the bathroom or ignores his reflection completely whenever he walks past water.

He doesn't believe he's ugly, no far from it. Jet knows he's not from the way girls smile shyly whenever he talks to them. The way they giggle with flustered faces whenever they're in his presence. Smellerbee always rolls her eyes whenever he indulges a little in flirting with girls whenever they pass in a town.

No, Jet hates his face because he looks just like his mother.

His beautiful, caring mother. The one that would always kiss him goodnight after telling him stories of spirits or star-crossed lovers. She was a hopeless romantic jet remembers that. His mother who would coddle him and rock her in his lap after he came home crying, another one of the village boys picking on him for how small he was. Jet used to be quite scrawny and weak if his freedom fighters could believe that.

His mother, the one that protected him from the seething hot flames the best she could the day the fire nation came to their village. while his father did his best to hold the soldiers off. And when he failed to do so, held jet tight to her as she told him to run as far as he could and to never look back. Even promising him she'd be right behind him.

He didn't keep the promise of not looking back as Jet heard the wailing screams of his mother dying. Tears blurring his view of her as the last thing he saw of her was her eyes. Only to see her killer on a Komodo Rhino in front of him with a hatred he'd never seen before.

So now jet covers mirrors. And if he can't do that, he breaks them. Letting the glass shatter as his fist covers in blood. Not only does jet hate that he looks like his mother, but he has the same hatred in his eyes as her killer. Hatred for the fire nation and what it did to him, to his own people and others.

And the thought of the only reminisce jet has left of his mother being tarnished by seeing her face with hatred in her eyes, would kill him sooner than what was to become of him in ba sing se.

Something I've noticed in Zutara fics is that they make Zuko way too emotionally mature and generally competent/smart compared to canon while a lot of Zukka fics tend to make him way more dense, innocent and sweet compared to canon. I have been reading Atla fics lately and I've noticed this happening so often. It's jarring to me in both cases, I feel like it's the byproduct of writers making the characters fit tropes hence why the startling difference between how Zuko is characterized based on ship. I've also noticed Jetko fics somehow have the most in-character writing on average. Which is wild??? It's the last two characters I could see realistically working out as a couple and yet the fics feel more believable then most others. This is wild to me because they are even more in-character then most gen fics within the fandom too, which is saying something because in my usual fandom experience those are usually the ones with the best writing, but the Atla fandom is diff ig. I have literally no idea why but huge respect to Jetko authors for somehow making it work? (Obviously there's great gen fics, great Zutara and Zukka fics but I'm just generalizing here from what I've noticed.)

What if Jet was released from Lake Laogai and couldnt remember that he hated firebenders. He meets Smellerbee again and is surprised to see her because of his brainwashing, but happy nonetheless. She is surprised by the realization that he doesnt hate firebenders anymore, but doesnt say anything because she wants him to leave their old ways behind.

Settling into life in Ba Sing Se, Jet explores the city until one day, he walks by a tea shop - The Jasmine Dragon. He's drawn into the shop by a handsome boy with a scar pouring tea for a customer who seems familiar to Jet somehow. His eyes are locked on the oblivious tea server as he approaches him.

"Hey I'm Jet" he says to the object of his interest who looks up from his tray with bewilderment. What he asked in his head was "how could he forget me so quickly?" To Jet, whose face he could never forget, he replied "Lee" and paused "nice to meet you"

Authors who say “I had so much fun writing it!” about their fanfiction, how do you do that?

When I write, it is either:

a. Weird kind of flow where I don’t realize that I was writing for 3 hours. I just kinda zoom out and the writing happens without my conscious participation.

b. Shedding tears while trying to finish what I’ve written during the flow. Writing literally 20 words of bullshit per hour and hating myself for not being able to finish the damn thing.
